Bureau of Field Operations

The Bureau of Field Operations is the largest in the Sheriff’s Department.

This Bureau is comprised of two Divisions, Patrol Division and Communications Division both which operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week with three different shifts. It is comprised of approximately 84 Commissioned Personnel and 20 Non-Commissioned Personnel. Between the Bureau Captain and Lieutenants who are leading this bureau, they have a combined 185 years of law enforcement service.

Patrol Division

This division operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week with three different shifts.

  • First Watch / Day Shift – 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Second Watch / Evening Shift – 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
  • Third Watch / Midnight Shift – 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.

Each of these shifts are assigned a Watch Commander Lieutenant and two Shift Commander Sergeants. They lead each of the shifts on a rotation basis.

The Patrol Division is directly responsible for maintaining a uniform presence 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The county is divided into eight patrol zones. Patrol Division is responsible for contract patrols in the cities of Augusta, Weldon Springs Heights, St. Paul, Flint Hill, Portage De Sioux, and West Alton. Additionally, they provide a dedicated deputy full time for Law Enforcement Patrol Services to the municipalities of Dardenne Paraire and Weldon Spring.

In 1972, the Sheriff's Department enacted the permanent vehicle assignment program, which assigns a vehicle to each deputy who is responsible for the maintenance and up keep of their assigned vehicle. This also allows deputies to take their assigned vehicle to their residence, which increases visibility and enhances response times and safety to the county residence. The current fleet of marked patrol vehicle models include Crown Vic, Tahoe, Explorer, and Charger to name a few.

Each of our patrol vehicles are equipped with equipment specialized to assist Deputies with their assigned duties, while serving the residences of the County. Some of the items include: new state of the art radio system, mobile data computers, radar units, digital video cameras, and GPS navigation systems.

The Patrol Division has several Specialized Units within it. Please select the link to learn more about each of our specialized units.

Communications Division

This division operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week with three different shifts.

  • First Watch / Day Shift – 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Second Watch / Evening Shift – 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
  • Third Watch / Midnight Shift – 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
The Communications Division is the day-to-day lifeline of our department. They serve as the receiving point for 9-1-1 calls, evaluating incoming emergency and non-emergency phone calls to determine the level of service required. They also are responsible for the processing and dispatching of calls for service for St. Charles County Deputies and Park Rangers.  Additionally, they provide department personnel with access to additional resources and inter-agency communications.
